Masala Mixtape LA In Review

This weekend, I went to the first Masala Mixtape in LA. As we celebrate AAPI month, I was excited to support some friends in the community and see them perform live.

For context, this was the first Masala Mixtape to take place in LA. Normally, their events take place in NYC, so to put this on was a huge feat for them. The event was hosted by the event group And/Aur and organized by two South Asian women, Pankti Doshi and Ramya Baratam. They did an amazing job with the venue choice and the talent they chose to bring to the stage.

Before going into the main event, let’s talk about the vendors. I connected with Mudita Vij, the owner of The Whole 9. She has redefined the functionality of the Indian Saree by repurposing them into throws, table runners, and pillow covers. She has done an amazing job connecting sustainability with Indian artisanship, limiting material wastage to create sentimental pieces to be shared for a lifetime. Check out some of her beautiful crafts below:

It’s not a party unless food is involved, and lucky for me, I also got to meet the brother owners of the fine dining restaurant Shor Bazaar, the sister restaurant of Michelin-winning kitchen Khan Saab in Fullerton. I tried their samosas and it was impeccable. I have heard of the restaurant and have yet to try it, but you bet your ass I am OTW now.

Moving on to the performances, I have no words to describe how talented the artists were. There were a collection of DJs, singers, and producers, each distinct in their craft. It’s amazing to see so many South Asian creatives come together to share their craft with the community.

Here were some of the artists that performed at Masala Mixtape LA:

Shubha

Sanjoy

Dr. Srimix ft. Aditya Rao (one of my favorite sets of the night)

Anusha Savi

Gayathri Krishnan

DIXI

DJ Vishnu

Sakharii

Narasimha

Soukhya

Do take the time to listen to each of them. They were all great performers who knew how to rattle a crowd.

Officially, ready to run it back. Catch me at the next one!
